Dr. Nassif MD Detox Pads - Complexion Perfecting Pads With Alpha/Beta Hydroxy Acids || #RivetReview

You may know Dr. Paul Nassif as one of the stars of Botched, a reality show about botched cosmetic procedures, where his expertise as a plastic surgeon is highly sought after for those who've undergone a dodgy treatment.

Naturally, being a medical aesthetics fixture in Beverly Hills, California, he has released a line of clinical grade skincare that is designed to target concerns such as dryness and dehydration, and help prevent damage to the function and appearance of our skin. In today's review, we'll be breaking down the Bio-clock Dermaceuticals Detox Pads, which has just won TVSN's 2018 Customer Beauty Award for Best New Innovation!

Product

These pads are an all-in-one way to cleanse, tone, resurface, and hydrate skin. They contain both alpha and beta hydroxy acids (AHAs and BHAs, respectively) where the former helps exfoliate the outer layers of skin to reveal new skin quicker, and the latter which helps to unclog pores.

The key acids at play are lactic, glycolic, and salicylic. Lactic acid tends to work at the very surface of the skin, being the most gentle of the acids. Glycolic acid is a lot smaller and able to wiggle further down through the skin's extracellular matrix (all the gooey stuff that keeps skin cells stuck to one and other) to kickstart cell renewal. Salicylic acid is a precursor to Aspirin, and its chemical properties allow it to dissolve in oils found in the skin and exfoliate in the pores, plus offer some anti-inflammatory effects.

Other ingredients include:
+ Allantoin - a soothing ingredient that reduces irritation of the skin
+ Willow Bark - this is the natural source of where salicylic acid can be found, but the compound is slightly different in structure
+ Witch Hazel - an astringent ingredient that helps kill bacteria

Claims

These pads claim to firm and exfoliate skin, reduce the size of pores, and provide a refreshed and radiant complexion.

How To Use

Wipe over face, avoiding the immediate eye area, sans rinsing. It is recommended for daily AM and PM use for those with oily skin, but those with dry and sensitive conditions should build up a tolerance until it can be handled. It has a slight tingling effect.

Packaging + Physical Properties

60 pre-soaked pads are packed in a plastic jar with a screw top lid and soaked in the clear liquid product. It smells fruity and sweet. The jar is quite bulky, and probably could have been smaller, given the size of the pads. There is quite a lot of product left at the bottom of the jar once the pads are all used up, so the rest can be finished with regular old cotton pads.

Thoughts?

I really like the fragrance and the clean feel the product offers. I'm down to my last two pads, which I have not really been using daily, but a few times a week, in conjunction with other skincare. I don't find it irritating at all, probably because of my tolerance of acids, suggesting that these do only contain a tiny percentage, but I do like the dewy glow it gives after use. I'm not sure whether this is  supposed to be like a toner, or cleanser, so I just use them after cleansing and prior to other serums. They'd be really suitable for a beginner of chemical exfoliation.

  1. Great way of explaining all those acids. I haven’t been looking after my skin for the last 10years other than simple cleanser and moisturiser and never read the ingredients cos I wouldn’t understand them but your explanation was helpful. Now I just need to remember it.

    1. It's incredibly simplified, but it kind of represents how it works (at least from the perspective of a beauty therapist!) Chemistry of the skin is so fascinating and I want to jump in on it when I finish my degree! :)
