BRITEPLEX Bond Multiplying Treatment || Science Behind Bleaching Hair || #RivetReview

How do you get hair from dark brown to blonde without frying it? It's an age old question. Even professional hairdressers have ruined my hair during the bleaching process. Now days, many more brunettes have gone blonde thanks to a protective additive that can minimize damage during the process of lifting 8-10+ levels of colour.

I have been using Brite Organix to bleach and colour my hair for a while now, but I knew that my hair was suffering from all that processing. I've wanted to jump onto the Plex bandwagon, but when BRITE came out with BRITEPLEX, I knew I had to have it.

SCOUT Cosmetics Nutraceutical Super Food Skincare || Rivet Licker

I can't pass up testing out Aussie brands, especially ones that are Sydney based and harness native Australian botanical derivatives such as Desert Lime, Davidson Plum and Kangaroo Apple. There's nothing quite like the bouquet and unique experience of our large and remote island.

SCOUT Cosmetics released a line of skincare using those very ingredients to cleanse, treat and moisturise a variety of skin types. SCOUT also offers a range of mineral makeup and all products in the range are cruelty free.

It's skinCARE, not skinSHAMING! || Rivet Licker

Why is shaming natural processes the default form for getting people to buy cosmetics? Sure, even I thought that if I didn't wear makeup or care for my skin, I would never be beautiful. In fact, I feel more beautiful now because I can make the choice to wear makeup and make sure my skin is healthy.

Skincare is probably one of the major culprits, with tag-lines such as "anti-ageing", "anti-wrinkle", and "pore minimizing" etc, being the reason we are being conned into buying products to stay "youthful". On top of this, I go into depth about how I feel about the appearance of my own skin.

You probably don't have dry skin! || TRUE DRY VS. OILY + DEHYDRATED || Rivet Licker

TRIGGER WARNING: This post contains images containing minor wounds with blood. Reader's discretion is advised.

I don't think most consumers really understand what dry skin is. Is your skin lacking oil, or water? Probably water!

Looking like you're a bit flaky can be one sign of dry skin, but there's a difference between truly dry skin, and simply dehydrated conditions. Skin types are about how much sebum (oil) you naturally produce. Some may product a lot, some produce hardly any; it can be uniform, or it can be patchy (combination), it's not about how flaky or textured your skin is. Most people have the combination type, like myself – I have TRUE dry skin on my cheeks and a slightly oily T-Zone – however, this says nothing more than how much oil my skin is actually producing.

The #GoNaked Lush Christmas || 2017 Edit || Rivet Licker

Every year, Lush puts on a display of conceptually inspired products for their Christmas range. This year is no different.

The #GoNaked theme seeks to offer the consumer a range of products that do not need packaging - so you get all the product you’re paying for, and not a bunch of paper and plastic, waiting to be thrown out.

Cruelty Free Cosmetics || NUDESTIX AND THE CHINA LOOPHOLE || Rivet Licker

A few weeks back, I touched on the subject of Cruelty Free (CF) Cosmetics, and how NARS decided to ditch their animal friendly stance to enter the Chinese market. I learned a few things after speaking with Jenny Frankel, co-founder of NUDESTIX, over DM. She gave me the information I wanted to communicate.

NUDESTIX are a Cruelty Free brand based in Toronto, Canada. Their products are sold exclusively in Sephora stores in Australia, and I met the team when I attended the Sephora Exclusive Brands Showcase last year. I have not been to subsequent events, but the whole conversation started there in 2016 when Super-Mum and Entrepreneur, Jenny and I were talking about animal testing and the Chinese market.

Ardell Pro Brow Defining Kit || ORIGINAL vs DARK SWATCHES || #RivetReview

I've recently gotten into brow powders, thinking they might offer a more subtle, and longer lasting brow, but finding the right colour is a pain! My eyebrows are black, cool toned black. Dark brown doesn't cut it, and eyeshadow or eyeliner is usually too strong.

Ardell are known for their lashes, but it was the expansion into the brow domain that got me intrigued to pick these up!

Why Can't All Cosmetics Be Cruelty Free? || #RivetRant

NARS has just announced it will be retailing their brand in mainland China, the only territory in the world where animal testing is a mandatory regulation to assure safety of products entering the market.

The flaws are obvious with this legislation, and here is why.

Innoxa Restore Hydrating Cleansing Oil || #RivetReview

Cleansing oils are some of the most gentle cleansers you could use. They bind with dirt and oil (like mixes with like), melt off makeup, and leave skin feeling clean and soft.

Innoxa is a cruelty free brand that started in France, and moved around the world, all the way to its new home in Australia. Their motto is "first do no harm", and this has been the philosophy ever since.

Makeup Look Archive || JANUARY + FEBRUARY 2017 || Rivet Licker

I've been wanting to do a regular posting of my makeup looks here on the blog, but I figure, why not start with a small archive. I'll do them month by month, starting from January 2017, and there will be full details.

I post makeup looks on Instagram every week or so, depending on what life throws at me, and I try to be as creative as possible! I list all the products I use, including shade names (if applicable). I hope you enjoy the archives for now, I intend to roll out one a week until we reach the most recent looks, and there will be a post every month from July onwards!

TESTING OUT $2.80 BEAUTY PRODUCTS || Daiso Cosmetics || #RivetReview

Korea and Japan are leaders in designing cosmetics. Every beauty trend we are seeing has been inspired in some way by these innovations. A lot of cosmetic manufacturing is done in Korean laboratories, too. Step in DAISO, a Japanese variety store that caters to the masses at an unbeatable price, with their own brand of beauty products.

I have never used any of Daiso's brand of cosmetics before; I've really only stuck to the home improvement, stationery and crafting supplies, and beauty accessories since discovering the store a few years back. I just didn't have faith in the brand's cosmetics because of cruelty free status and the ingredients + directions not being available in English. There were several recalls for personal care items in the past due to labelling, but it looks like the QC of Daiso Australia has brought this into line more recently.

CO-WASHING || How To Wash Your Hair With Conditioner || Rivet Licker

Washing hair has pretty much remained consistent over the years – shampoo first (sometimes twice), conditioner second. This meant you had to cleanse (i.e. strip your hair within its life), then restore your keratin strands with a conditioner. For coloured hair, this means fading colour quickly!

The bad doodles are bad!

Fortunately, new formulations and techniques have been added to the market to clean the hair and scalp without ruining your colour! Welcome the Conditioner Washing Revolution, and here's how to do it!

Rivet Rant: An Open Letter to PR || Rivet Licker

An open letter to brands and PR agencies who use influencer marketing.

A portfolio can speak far more words than a number of followers.

I wrote this around the same time that I published my first Rivet Rant on this topic, but it has become way more relevant now that I have reached out to some new brands and got knocked back because of my following. Not everybody will agree with me, but time and audience growth isn't the same for everybody.

Indeed Laboratories EYSILIX "INSTANT EYE RESCUE" - #RivetReview

I can't begin to describe how annoyed I have been with my eyes lately. Between medications, sleep problems, and just generally being unwell, my eye area has begun to suffer. It wasn't until my friend pointed out the bags under my eyes that I needed to do something about it. Eysilix to the rescue!

Old packaging.

Indeed Labs is a Canadian cosmeceutical brand that brings active ingredients to the consumer at drugstore price; the professional quality of anti-ageing and preventative formulas into the hands of the everyday person.

Do These Makeup Tools REALLY Work? - TRENDING - #RivetReview

There are always some kind of "revolutionary" tools that become available, often sprouting as fads that fizzle out into oblivion, but some are successful and game-changing. We all know those little beauty hacks, such as using household items to do perfect winged liner; but then there are tools that are made specifically for the task, like the original Beauty Blender sponge – the most popular tool for applying foundation, based off the old faithful, disposable makeup triangles.

In today's post, I will be testing out some tools I picked up that are meant to make applying (and removing) makeup easier. But do they *REALLY* work?

L'Unico Luxury Skincare: Product Range + Press Launch

It's rare that I get to trial the highest of the high-end products, mostly because I could never afford anything of this kind. What sets L'unico apart from the rest of the Luxe echelon of skincare (think La Mer or Sisley Paris, $400 for a jar of cream) is that it is not coming out of a luxe beauty house in France, but from a small business based in Sydney's south.

L'unico flat lay.

L'unico is your high-end, luxury formulation, designed by Sutherland Shire based compounding pharmacist, Magdy Sedrak, who has been working on bespoke formulations catered to his clientele from his laboratory in Miranda. I think I can just stop here and say, career goals.

TESTING OUT MAKEUP FROM BRANDS I WOULD NEVER BUY! (Or Repurchase)

I only deal with cruelty free brands, so I omit a lot of brands on the basis of animal testing (such as for sales in China), but there are also brands that are cruelty free that have had enough drama to put me off ever buying/repurchasing or endorsing the products on my blog. I had been following the Oh Dear Doe Deere Tumblr (and forums) for a few years, and the amount of brands that come up as dodgy definitely put things into perspective.

I'm open.

I have purchased from some brands that have recently been under fire for dodgy practices, but I won't mention them because of their previously clean track record, but I have recently been gifted some products from questionable brands that I would never have otherwise purchased or accepted as PR samples. I'm here to set the story straight and test out these products behind the controversy for quality and hype factor.

#RivetEmpties Week - LUSH EMPTIES & PURGE - January To April Empties!

Welcome to #RivetEmpties Week!

Day 4

Today is an ultra special day, because I am going through a bunch of Lush products. I found a heap at the back of my bathroom cupboard, and decided that there needs to be a special "purge". Well, I can at least trade in a few for face masks!!!

Items that are being purged were ones I found in the cupboard.
Some of the the purge items were empty, or I used them to store other items.
And of course, the empties used up between January and April will be clearly stated!
LET'S GO!

#RivetEmpties Week - HAIR & BODY - January to April Empties!

Welcome to #RivetEmpties Week!

Day 3

I'm not huge on body products, I mean, I hardly take care of the skin on my body as well as I do my face. My hair is also neglected a lot, so I live off dry shampoo. Now that I have chopped most of it off, I won't be using much product either, so this will probably be the last separate category for Hair & Body.

#RivetEmpties Week - SKINCARE - January to April Empties!

Welcome back to #RivetEmpties week!

Day 1

Over a period of a few months, anything between 3 and 6, I collect all the products I use up in that period (or products that go rancid) and do a theme week to show what I have managed to use up! This week will only have four posts, as I'm not really purging anything, so we'll start off with our week's favourite, SKINCARE!

Touch In Sol IN THE SKIN RENOVATION BB Cream - #RivetReview

I'm not sure whether the market was just saturated with Western ideas of KBeauty, with most of the big players offering some kind of product, and many of the cruelty free brands not doing it very well, that it took until KBeauty brands became mainstream amongst Westerners to actually find a BB Cream that I REALLY LIKE!

Touch In Sol In The Skin Renovation BB Cream.

Touch In Sol has been mentioned many times on my blog, but it is now going to be the star of the show.

Winter Goth - Beauty & Fashion Essentials

The weather is cooling down and we rejoice. I am staying indoors more often, but it's a relief that I can sleep with a blanket on and not wake up in a pool of sweat. This is also the time of year where I get more pain and fatigue, but it takes nothing out of my dark heart.

Rivet Licker's Winter Goth Beauty & Fashion Essentials

It's already May, and the heat waves seem to have finally died down, so it's on with the jackets and the deep leafy browns. Surely, I am not into Steampunk subculture, so I don't own any brown clothing, however, my face WILL wear shades of brown. Black is still a major player, but with the cool winds upon us, there are many cosmetic changes that need to be made.

Lush Mother's Day Collection - 2017 Limited Edition and NEW products!

Mother's Day is coming up for us Aussies on the 14th May 2017, and Lush really deliver on the theme! If you know me from way back, I used to write solely about Lush products, so this is walking back to those times.

Happy Mother's Day, from Lush!

BYS Berries Eyeshadow Palette Swatches + #RivetReview

BYS have been around the budget makeup and accessories circuit for as long as I can remember. From what I remember as a kid growing up in the nineties, "Be YourSelf" started out with tubes of lip glosses and pretty hair clips being sold at Go-Lo and other discount stores. In more recent years, BYS has upped distribution and the quality of product, leading us to a beautiful little palette that may be a dupe for a much more expensive palette!

BYS Berries Palette

The recently released Berries eyeshadow palette has SOLD OUT at my local Kmart, and it looks like it's getting around the beauty communities. A $16 eyeshadow palette that is ALL THE RAGE? This must be something good!

Cinch Skin FACE CHEAT Moisturiser + Glow - #RivetReview

Peptides & Skincare with Rivet - TRENDING

Peptides are not a new concept in skincare; they have been around for a few decades, but they are starting to trend as anti-aging miracle workers. A peptide is merely a building block made from short chains of amino acids (anything containing less than 50 amino acid bonds is considered a peptide). Proteins make up anatomical tissue structures, including the integumentary system, where our skin protects us from the outside world.

Illustration including a Tetrapeptide chain (four amino acids).

In this story, we will go into detail about three popular types of peptides used in skincare and anti-aging formulation, which include the old and trusted Matrixyl (plus its newer generation adaptations), Copper Peptides, and the topical Botox alternative, or "Faux-tox", Argireline.

Australis LIQUID ELIXIR Serum Foundation - #RivetReview

Australis are back at it with a new foundation formula, Liquid Elixir, the new way to get the NO MAKEUP look and feel!

I've been using Australis products for as long as I can remember, and being able to regularly feature their products on my blog is a great privilege. They are a brand who give easy access to hot beauty trends with quality products and great prices. The new sheer cover Liquid Elixir Serum Foundation found itself on my desk this week, and it's something I am totally wanting to tell everybody about!

*SPONSORED* RIVET RANT: Minimum 3000 followers to make $$$?!?!

My follower count is small because I keep it honest.
I get rid of the bots and the MLM representatives on Instagram.
I do everything on my blog without deception.
My worth as an influencer is minimal because of this.
I don't have that sociopathic trait that decimates everybody in the way for advancement.
I am a terrible liar.
If it's not the truth, I cannot say it.
I won't do it just for the money.
I wanted to do it because I related to it.
I tried to do it because I could have a small double-digit amount of dollars to put away for financial emergencies.
I tried so damn hard to stay awake and ready to do this.
What am I talking about?

My Perfect Facial Kit + Application Tutorial - #RivetReview

Today we take another look at some "instant results" cosmetics that have predictable and visible results every single time. My Perfect Facial is no exception, because it comes straight from the salon and clinic, right to your very home. A professional facial, sans the professional therapist.

My Perfect Facial Kit.

A few weeks back, I reviewed My Perfect Eyes from The Perfect Cosmetics, a really hot "instant results" product on the market. My Perfect Facial is another from the line created by Penny Lane. It was previously called "The Lift" by Eternal Essentials.

Rivet Rant: A WASH OF GREEN SUDDENLY MAKES EVERYTHING OKAY

I can think of several brands who make a stock standard line of products, then release a line of "naturals" or "botanics" into the range and use those buzzwords to attempt to sell a product that's supposed to be better for you or the environment. Stick a tree or a leaf on the packaging, and voila, you have a green product!

Greenwashing is rampant.

Tying in with the theme of chemicals = bad and natural = good, here are some terms that definitely don't have a say in how eco-friendly a product is.

How to to get that post-facial glow at home! Facial Massage Technique

Have you ever had a really good facial where your skin looks and feels amazing, and you feel like you have been floating on a cloud? A facial involves more than just a therapist applying skincare, there is also the aspect of relaxation via human touch and a serene environment. Okay, so our homes may not be a sanctuary, but I can definitely give you a few pointers to get that glow, with your very own hands and products already in your arsenal!

Facials are more than they appear.

Why does your skin glow after a facial? One of two things - firstly, your skin is stimulated with products and touch. Secondly, you probably weren't aware about how dehydrated your skin may have been prior to treatment. Dehydration is a major contributor to dull looking skin, even when you drink the recommended amount of water per day. Hydration is a very hot topic on my blog because I experience TEWL (trans-epidermal water loss) very easily due to having unsubstantial oil flow (dry skin).

Rivet Rant: CHEMICALS, AND TOXINS, AND SCARES, OH MY!

Ever look at a product and think "oh wow, they've really got a gripe on consumers with their scare tactic sales pitch"?

If there is anything I have learned from being a science nerd my whole life, is that there is a very fine line between the truth and things pretending to be the truth (“Alternative Facts”). Science is a discipline where evidence is collected and can be replicated each and every time. It teaches you to be critical – and when you're surrounded by marketing buzzwords all the time, being critical is REALLY important.

My little piece of work that went viral, reposted by Nihilist Memes and Insufferably Intolerant Science Nerd on Facebook.

I honestly don't blame consumers for having an idea that certain things are bad – I blame the people who are purposely making up their own facts and philosophies, projecting them as the truth.

Here are a few common terms thrown around in marketing that really annoy me to tears.

Spend $49 on selected haircare brands and get a gift bag worth over $260RRP. What was in it?

My purchases - 20% off Brite.

I decided to stock up on more Brite products to maintain my hair colour with Brite Organix products from the whole range being 20% off. The Schwarzkopf Brilliance permanent hair colour in the shade "68 Chocolate Rush" is my Mum's go-to colour.

HydroSkin: Hydrating Skincare - #RivetReview

Water is the elixir that keeps us alive – the simple H2O molecule makes up 70% of our body's structures and is CRITICAL to looking good, and you know, being not dead. Dehydration is a major factor in skin looking and functioning poorly, and a condition that isn't always easily treated by drinking more water; sometimes the skin needs a little bit of help from the outside with the hero active, HYALURONIC ACID.

HydroSkin Travel/Starter Pack - Cleanser, Hydro Mist, [HA] Serum and C Moisturiser

The aesthetically pleasing, sleek and shiny silver airless pump bottles are the perfect storage for volatile actives.

HydroSkin were exhibitors at Beauty Expo Sydney (back in August 2016), one of the vendors I visited and chatted to. Being a new brand on the market, they really got their marketing gear on with branded bottles of water, brochures and even running a competition in partnership with Australia's version of reality show The Bachelor. When I received a DM stating that I had won a Travel/Starter Pack, I was so excited!

Dupe? Nudestix Eyebrow Stylus & Gel vs Australis Tag Team Brow Pencil & Gel - #RivetReview

I love finding product dupes. They're a great way to get a similarly performing formula or a colour match at a more wallet friendly price point. In today's post, the focus is on a product from Sephora, versus a product from Priceline. Which one will win?

Nudestix vs Australis

Nudestix and Australis are two brands I hold up in my highest echelon. Both are cruelty free and boast a wide array of high quality products in on-trend colours, but when I discovered that one of the new releases from the latter, a drugstore favourite in Australia, resembled a product extremely similar to the former, at less than half the price, I was intrigued to compare the two.

Rivet Rant: My Beauty School shut down and now I am "Schrödinger's Student"

I made it public knowledge that I attended The Australasian College Broadway [TACB] as a Beauty Therapy student. I even wrote articles for the college as one of their Student Bloggers^ – kick starting what I have here with Rivet Licker. I enjoyed my time there, until I felt that I had exhausted my avenues of learning salon and spa type treatments enough to warrant applying to their higher education Bachelor Degree in Clinical Aesthetics – where the real fun is. Reality bites.

Guess which one I am. Screenshot: @the_australasian_college student blogger promotion. [Account deactivated]

My Perfect Eyes - #RivetReview

Instant results cosmetics are all the rage, and Penny Lane's My Perfect Eyes doesn't need an introduction. I could repeat what the informercial and every other beauty editor is saying, but for those not already in the know; this is the "MIRACLE EYE CREAM" that made the tabloids in the UK.

My Perfect Eyes

My Perfect Eyes, previously branded under Eternal Essentials "Eyesential" (a product that my Mum has purchased before but didn't use), is a veil type product that instantly improves the texture and appearance of the under eye area, including fine lines and puffiness, for approximately 10 hours.

#RivetEmpties Week - PURGE DAY - 2017

#RivetEmpties Week

Day 5

Today, in an incredible finale to #RivetEmpties Week, we purge. All the old products that didn't get completely used because they turned rancid, or I didn't like the product and knew I would never use it again. This is the kind of stuff that won't even warrant finding a new home because it's that old, and questionable. I wouldn't give it to my worst enemy, it's just disgusting and needs to be thrown out. Chances are, I won't be repurchasing anything listed here.

WARNING: LONG POST AHEAD!

All items featured in this and previous #RivetEmpties posts will be disposed of thoughtfully.

#RivetEmpties Week - MASKS & TREATMENTS - August to December Empties!

#RivetEmpties Week

Day 2

This particular post felt that it was carrying its own weight to justify a separate post. Ahh, got to love marketing.

#RivetEmpties Week - SKINCARE - August to December Empties!

Welcome to #RivetEmpties Week!

Day 1

If you have been following me on social media for the past year, you'll know that my last empties week was held in July of 2016, and was posted on Instagram under the hashtag #RivetEmpties (go have a look, the posts are still there!) And in previous times, I used to do empties as YouTube videos, when I still had the ability to sit in front of a camera and talk. These theme weeks come every four to six months, depending on when the box gets full, and how determined I am to use up products. This week showcases August through December. As it's a theme week that ties in with the turn of the calendar, there will be posts every day with a special New Year PURGE on Friday.

Being a beauty writer, I go through heaps of product to come up with content, and skincare is probably the big one I talk about, so where better to start than with all the stuff I stick on my face? It's actually REALLY hard using up product when I have to test so many to give my opinions, but somehow, I managed to get these babies fully used (or at least I found them in the cupboard, way past their prime).
